Fagara L., Gattung der Rutazeen, oft stachelige Sträucher oder Bäume mit abwechselnden, einfachen, gedreiten oder gefiederten Blättern, kleinen Blüten in zusammengesetzten Rispen, seltener in Scheintrauben oder echten Trauben und trocknen oder steinfruchtartigen Früchten. Über 130 Arten in allen tropischen Ländern. F. flava Krug et Urb., in Westindien, liefert hartes, ziemlich schweres, glattspaltiges, semmelfarbenes Satinholz (Seidenholz), das zu Möbeln, eingelegter Arbeit, Bürstendeckeln und Drechslerarbeiten benutzt wird. Das beste kommt aus Portoriko, geringeres aus San Domingo und Jamaika. F. (Zanthoxylum) Pterota L., in Mittelamerika, Westindien, Kolumbien, liefert das Eisenholz von Jamaika, das sich durch große Bruchfestigkeit auszeichnet und in England als Werftholz geschätzt ist.
