Stockton, Hauptstadt der Grafschaft San Joaquin in Kalifornien, am Slough, einem schiffbaren Arme des 5 km entfernten San Joaquin und an der Central-Pacific-Bahn, in Dampferverkehr mit San Francisco, inmitten eines ergiebigen Weizengebietes, mit mehreren schönen Kirchen, Kloster, Bibliotheken, der Irrenanstalt des Staates, hat Fabriken für Wagen, Ackergerät, Gerberei, Gießereien, große Warenhäuser, bedeutenden Produktenhandel und (1900) 17,506 Einw. Eine Lokalbahn führt nach Milton, von wo Wagen zum Calaverashain mit Riesenbäumen und zum Yosemitetal gehen.
