Popper, David, Violoncellist, geb. 9. Dez. 1843 in Prag, erhielt seine Ausbildung am dortigen Konservatorium, war dann Mitglied der fürstlich Hechingenschen Kapelle in Löwenberg und 1868–73 erster Cellist der Wiener Hofoper. Nachdem er mehrere Jahre nur als Virtuos gereist, nahm er eine Stellung als Lehrer an der Landesmusikakademie in Pest an. 1872–86 war er mit Sophie Menter (s. d.) verheiratet. P. ist ein hervorragender Virtuos und hat auch die Literatur seines Instruments durch dankbare Solostücke und eine »Hohe Schule des Violoncellspiels« (Leipz. 1906) bereichert.
