Instrument (lat., ital. stromento), Werkzeug, insbes. zur Ausübung der Tonkunst (Musikinstrumente, s. d.) oder zu wissenschaftlichen Beobachtungen und Untersuchungen, in welch letzterer Beziehung man chirurgische, mathematische, physikalische, astronomische (s. Astronomische Instrumente) etc. Instrumente unterscheidet. Eine »Zeitschrift für Instrumentenkunde«, Organ der physikalisch-technischen Reichsanstalt, erscheint seit 1881 in Berlin. Vgl. Marpmann, Illustrierte Fachlexika der gesamten Apparaten-, Instrumenten- und Maschinenkunde (Leipz. 1901 ff.). – In der Rechtswissenschaft heißt I. die Urkunde über ein Rechtsgeschäft, z. B. ein Friedensvertrag, eine Vollmacht, ein Hypothekeninstrument, ein Pachtvertrag; Instrumentszeugen (Solennitätszeugen), die als Urkundspersonen, z. B. bei Aufnahme eines notariellen Aktes, zugezogenen Zeugen.
