Kerak

Kerak, Hauptstadt des asiatisch-türk. Sandschaks Ma'an im Ostjordanland, am gleichnamigen, ins Tote Meer mündenden Wadi, 1040 m ü. M., mit starker Garnison, treibt ansehnlichen Handel mit den Beduinen, hat eine protestantische Mission und 10,000 Einw. (1/5 Christen, 4/5 Muslime). Die stark befestigte Stadt, welche die Karawanenstraße von Syrien nach Ägypten und Arabien beherrschte, das alte Kir Moab (s. d.), war in der Kreuzfahrerzeit heftig umstritten und wurde erst nach fünfjähriger Belagerung 1188 durch Saladin erobert. Noch wohl erhalten ist die mächtige Kreuzfahrerburg außerhalb der Ringmauern südlich der Stadt, ebenso eine Kirche, jetzt Moschee.
