Osymandias

Osymandias, bei Diodoros Name eines alten ägyptischen Königs, der mit Ramses II. identisch ist, und dessen von Diodor ausführlich beschriebenes Grabmal in umfangreichen Trümmern beim heutigen Medinet Habu auf der Westseite des Nils bei Theben unter dem Namen Ramesseum noch vorhanden ist. Dasselbe wurde von Ramses II. als Grabtempel für seinen Totenkult errichtet und ist von besonderm Interesse durch die Trümmer einer aus Granit bestehenden Kolossalstatue des Königs, die an Größe ehemals die sogen. Memnonsstatuen übertroffen haben muß, sowie durch merkwürdige Darstellungen aus den Kriegen des Ramses. Der Name O. ist aus dem Vornamen Ramses' II. Ufer-ma-rē (Usimarē) vererbt. Vgl.
