Gregŏras

Gregŏras (Nikephoros), byzantin. Gelehrter, geb. 1295, gest. um 1360, lebte seit 1322 am Hofe des Kaisers Andronikos II. und lehrte nach dem Tode seines Gönners (1328) in Konstantinopel Philosophie und Astronomie. Schließlich wurde er wegen seiner leidenschaftlichen Anteilnahme an den durch Palamas (s. d.) hervorgerufenen kirchlichen Streitigkeiten in ein Kloster eingeschlossen. Er schrieb eine Geschichte des byzantinischen Reiches von 1204–1359 parteiisch und in affektiertem Stil (zuerst vollständig hrsg. von Schopen und Becker, Bonn 1829–55), außerdem theologische Streitschriften, philosophische Abhandlungen, astronomische, grammatische und rhetorische Schriften, Briefe u. a.
