Motley

Motley (spr. mottlĭ), John Lothrop, nordamerikan. Geschichtschreiber, geb. 15. April 1814 in Dorchester (Massachusetts), gest. 29. Mai 1877 in England, studierte auf der Harvard-Universität in Cambridge, dann in Göttingen, wo er sich mit Bismarck befreundete, und Berlin und erhielt 1841 eine Anstellung als Gesandtschaftssekretär in Petersburg. Schon 1842 kehrte er in seine Heimat zurück und widmete sich fortan der schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit, namentlich als Mitarbeiter der »North-American Review«; auch schrieb er einige Novellen und Romane. Später veröffentlichte er nach archivalischen Studien in Europa: »History of the rise of the Dutch republic« (Lond. 1856, 3 Bde.; deutsch, Dresd. 1857–60, 3 Bde.). Die Fortsetzung erschien u.d. T.: »History of the United Netherlands from the death of William the Silent to the synod of Dordt« (Lond. 1860–64, 4 Bde.). 1861–67 war er Gesandter in Wien und 1869–71 in London. Seine letzten Werke waren: »The life and death of John of Barneveld, with a view of the primary causes of the Thirty year's war« (1873, 2 Bde.). Sein Briefwechsel wurde 1889 von Curtis herausgegeben und von Eltze ins Deutsche übersetzt (Berl. 1889, 2 Bde.). Gesammelt erschienen seine mehrfach ausgelegten Werke New York 1900, eingeleitet von Griffis, in 17 Bänden und bei Murray in London 1904 in 9 Bänden. Vgl. Holmes, Memoir of John Lothrop M.
