Milne

Milne (spr. miln), John, Erdbebenforscher, geb. 1850 in Liverpool, war als Bergbauingenieur in Neufundland und Labrador tätig und nahm als Geolog 1874 an Bekes Expedition nach dem nord westlichen Arabien teil. 1876 ging er über Rußland, Sibirien, Mongolei und China nach Japan, wo er (für die Dauer von 20 Jahren) die Professur für Bergbau und Mineralogie an der Ingenieurschule der Universität in Tokio übernahm. Hier, in dem an Erdbeben so reichen Land, entwickelte er eine große Tätigkeit zur Belebung der seismologischen Beobachtungen. Er gründete 1883 eine Seismologische Gesellschaft in Tokio, schuf ein Netz von 968 Beobachtungsstationen und konstruierte geeignete Apparate. Experimentelle Untersuchungen mit Dynamit und fallenden schweren Massen führten ihn zur genauern Kenntnis der Erscheinungen, welche die Erderschütterungen begleiten. Er lebt jetzt in Newport auf der Insel Wight. Außer einer Reihe von Abhandlungen in den »Transactions of the Seismological Society of Japan« schrieb er: »Earth quakes and other earth movements« (1886, 4. Aufl. 1898); »The miner's handbook« (1894, 3. Aufl. 1902); »Seismology« (1898); »Crystallography«. Mit Burton gab er eine Beschreibung der Vulkane von Japan heraus (»Volcanoes of Japan«, 1. Teil, Yokohama 1892).
