Millerand

Millerand (spr. mil'rāng), Alexandre, franz. Politiker, geb. 10. Febr. 1859 in Paris, wurde daselbst 1881 Rechtsanwalt, trat gleichzeitig in die Redaktion der Clemenceauschen Zeitung »La Justice« ein und wurde 1884 in den Pariser Gemeinderat und 1885 in die Deputiertenkammer gewählt. In beiden Versammlungen schloß er sich den Sozialisten an und machte sich durch seine zahlreichen Interpellationen zugunsten der Arbeiterklasse bemerklich; er ist ein gewandter Redner. 1889 gründete er ein eignes Blatt: »La Voix«. Im Juni 1899 im Kabinett Waldeck-Rousseau übernahm er das Handelsministerium, das er bis zum Mai 1902 innehatte. Die Mäßigung, die er als Minister zeigte, zog ihm von seiten der extremen Sozialisten große Anfeindungen zu; doch lehnte der sozialistische Parteikongreß in Bordeaux 14. April 1903 den Ausschluß Millerands aus der Partei ab. Vgl. Lavy, L'œuvre de M. (Par. 1902).
