Marvin

Marvin, Charles, engl. Reisender und Schriftsteller, geb. 1854, gest. 5. Dez. 1890 in London, verbrachte seine Jugend in Rußland und erlangte, nach England zurückgekehrt, eine Stelle im Auswärtigen Amte, verlor dieselbe aber, als er 1878 die Abschrift eines Geheimvertrages zwischen England und Rußland an eine Zeitung verkaufte. Im Auftrag des »Newcastle Chronicle« bereiste er 1882 Rußland, begleitete 1883 die englische Gesandtschaft zur Krönung des neuen Zaren und besuchte darauf den Kaukasus und das Kaspische Meer. Er schrieb: »Grodekoff's ride from Samarcand to Herat« (1880, 2. Aufl. 1886); »Merv, queen of the world and scourge of the Turcomans« (1881); »The Russian advance towards India« (1882); »The Russians at Merv and Herat« (1883); »Reconnoitring Central-Asia« (1884); »Region of eternal fire: Petroleum region of the Caspian« (1884, 3. Aufl. 1891).
