Manhattan (spr. mǟnhätten), Insel im nordamerikan. Staat New York, auf der die Stadt New York liegt, durch die Abzweigung des Harlem und East River vom Hudson gebildet, 21 km lang, im Mittel 3 km breit, 5660 Hektar groß, besteht teils aus Gneis- und Dolomitfelsen, teils aus jüngstem Schwemmland und steigt am Nordende steil zu den 73 m hohen Washington Heights auf. Die Insel wurde 1626 durch Peter Minuit für Waren im Werte von 24 Doll. von den Indianern, nach denen sie benannt ist, eingetauscht.
