Athabasca (Elkfluß, franz. Rivière la Biche), Fluß im westlichen Kanada (s. Karte »Kanada«), hat seine Quellen am 2208 m hohen Athabascapaß, in den ungeheuern Schneefeldern und Gletschern des Mount Columbia und Mount Forbes (4200 m), wird nach der Aufnahme des Pembina und Kleinen Sklavenflusses 268 km weit schiffbar, hat aber dann eine 135 km lange unpassierbare Schnellenreihe (die »Grand Rapids«) bis Fort Mc Murray, wo er den Clearwater aufnimmt und von neuem bis zur Mündung in den Athabascasee schiffbar wird. Beim Austritt (210 m ü. M.) aus dem 310 km langen, bis 50 km breiten und 11,400 qkm großen See mit dem gewaltigen Peace River (s. d.) vereinigt, bildet er den Großen Sklavenfluß und unterhalb des Großen Sklavensees den Mackenzie (s. d.). – Nach dem Strome benannt ist ein von ihm sowie von dem Peace River und Churchill durchflossenes Territorium von Kanada, das sich zwischen 55 und 60° nördl. Br. und 100 und 119° westl. L. ausdehnt, im W. von Britisch-Kolumbia, im N. von Mackenzie, im O. von Keewatin, im S. von Saskatchewan und Alberta begrenzt wird, 650,600 qkm groß mit etwa 10,000 Einw. Es ist vorwiegend noch Wald-, Sumpf- und Seenwildnis, z. T. Prärieland. Die Kulturmöglichkeiten sind beschränkt, am Peace River ist aber bei Fort Vermillion Weizenbau gelungen. Die Fundstätten von Erdharz, Petroleum und Naturgas bei den Grand Rapids erwiesen sich noch nicht benutzbar. Weiße bewohnen nur die Handelsposten und Forts der Hudsonbaigesellschaft. Haupthilfsquelle ist die Pelztierjagd der Indianer.
