Ataulf

Ataulf (Athaulf, Athaulfus), erster »König« der Westgoten, Bruder der Gattin Alarichs (s. d.), dem er aus Pannonien 409 gotische und hunnische Scharen nach Italien nachgeführt hatte, wurde 410 dessen Nachfolger. Er bot 412 dem gallischen Usurpator Jovinus seine Dienste an, erhielt Burdigala (Bordeaux) zum Standort, ließ sich aber durch den kaiserlichen Präfekten Dardanus wieder für Honorius gewinnen und bezwang die gallische Empörung, entzweite sich jedoch abermals mit dem Kaiser, dessen Schwester Placidia er seit 410 gefangen mit sich führte, wurde Ende 413 vor Massilia (Marseille) von Bonifacius verwundet, vermählte sich im Januar 414 mit Placidia zu Narbo, erhielt vom gotischen Gegenkaiser Attalus Aquitanien, eroberte Tolosa, verbrannte Burdigala, gab 415, durch Hunger bezwungen, auch Narbo auf und zog nach Spanien. Durch Placidia der römischen Kultur gewonnen, nannte er ihren Sohn, der bald starb und in Barcino begraben ward, Theodosius, konnte aber den erstrebten Frieden mit Honorius nie erlangen. Im August 415 wurde A. zu Barcelona von seinem Sklaven Dubius aus Rache für dessen ehemaligen, auf Ataulfs Antrieb 412 getöteten Herrn Sarus ermordet. Seine Kinder aus erster Ehe ließ sein Nachfolger Sigerich töten.
