Madiun, niederländ. Residentschaft in der Osthälfte von Java und an dessen Südküste, ein hügeliges, wohlbewässertes Land, an dessen Ostgrenze gegen Kediri sich der Vulkan Wilis (2556 m), an dessen Westgrenze gegen Surakarta sich der Lawu (3238 m) erheben, 5286 qkm mit (1896) 1,138,565 Einw., darunter 1363 Europäer und 4456 Chinesen, die starke Fischerei (Ausfuhr von getrockneten Fischen) treiben und an den Flußläufen, namentlich am Solo, Reis, Tabak, Kaffee, Indigo, Zucker, Baumwolle, Zimt u. a. gewinnen. Auch gibt es Petroleum- und heiße Solquellen. Hauptort ist das Dorf M. am gleichnamigen Fluß und an der Bahn Surakarta-Surabaja; Hafenplatz ist Patjitan.
