Lock

Lock, Michael, Bildhauer, geb. 27. April 1848 in Köln, gest. 20. Febr. 1898 in Berlin, trat mit zwölf Jahren zu dem Bildhauer Eschenbach in Köln in die Lehre, bei dem er das Holzschnitzen und Steinhauen erlernte, und war anfangs an dekorativen Bildwerken für Kirchen tätig. 1866 ging er nach Hannover, wo er als Gehilfe bei Dopmeyer arbeitete, daneben aber auch selbständige künstlerische Studien im Modellieren nach der Natur machte. Auch nachdem er 1868 nach Berlin übergesiedelt war, arbeitete er vorzugsweise auf dem Gebiete der dekorativen Plastik, indem er eine große Zahl von figürlichen und ornamentalen Bildwerken für öffentliche und Privatgebäude nach eignen und fremden Entwürfen modellierte und in Stein ausführte. Nachdem er 1874 eine Studienreise nach Italien gemacht, wo besonders die Werke Michelangelos einen starken Einfluß auf ihn übten, versuchte er sich auch in idealen plastischen Schöpfungen eigner Erfindung; aber erst auf der Ausstellung von 1884 gelang es ihm, mit einer Gruppe des Dädalos mit dem Leichnam des Ikaros einen Erfolg zu erzielen. Es folgten 1886 ein am Kreuz sterbender Spartacus und 1888 eine aus sechs kolossalen Figuren bestehende Gruppe der Kreuzabnahme (jetzt im Dom zu Berlin). Das Hauptwerk seines Lebens ist die Gruppe des in einem Lehnstuhl sitzenden sterbenden Kaisers Wilhelm I. mit dem Todesengel zur Seite, »Ich habe keine Zeit, müde zu sein«, die auf der Ausstellung von 1897 mit der großen goldenen Medaille ausgezeichnet und nach Locks Tod in Marmorausführung für das Hohenzollernmuseum in Berlin angekauft wurde.
