Ascham

Ascham (spr. äßkäm), Roger, engl. Gelehrter, geb. 1515 in Kirby-Wiske (Yorkshire), gest. 30. Dez. 1568, studierte in Cambridge, wurde Professor des Griechischen und 1548 zum Lehrer der spätern Königin Elisabeth berufen. Die Jahre 1550–53 brachte er als Sekretär des Gesandten Morysine am Hofe Karls V. in Deutschland zu; über seine hier angestellten Beobachtungen berichtete er in dem »Report and discourse of the affairs and state in Germany« (1553). Dann wurde er, obwohl Protestant, lateinischer Sekretär der Königin Maria und nach deren Tode (1558) der Königin Elisabeth. Seine »Epistolae familiares« waren als Muster des lateinischen Briefstils berühmt. Er war zeitlebens und mit Erfolg bemüht, England für die antiken, besonders die hellenischen Ideale zu erziehen; hierzu schrieb er sein Hauptwerk: »The schoolmaster, or the plain way of teaching children to the latin tongue« (hrsg. von Arber in den »English reprints«, 1870). In einem eignen Buch (»Toxophilus«) empfahl er das Armbrustschießen. Eine Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke besorgte Giles (Lond. 1864 bis 1865, 4 Bde.). Vgl.
