Lanark

Lanark (spr. lännark), Hauptstadt (royal burgh) von Lanarkshire (Schottland), in malerischer Lage am mittlern Clyde, der hier berühmte Wasserfälle bildet, mit mehreren modernen Kirchen (am ältesten die anglikanische Kirche von 1774), umfangreichem Grafschaftsgebäude, Lateinschule, Weberei, Gerberei, Brauereien und (1901) 6440 Einw. – L. ist ein alter Ort. Kenneth II. versammelte hier 978 ein Parlament, und William Wallace (1297) machte es zum Ausgangspunkt seiner Unternehmungen. Dabei Dorf New L. (672 Einw.), 1783 von D. Dale gegründet, mit der Baumwollspinnerei, in der Rob. Owen (1814 bis 1827) seine Versuche zur Hebung der sozialen Lage der Arbeiter machte (jetzt gehört jene einer Aktiengesellschaft).
