Lambessa (Lambèse), Ort im algerischen Depart. Konstantine, am Fuße des Aurês, 1145 m ü. M., mit großer Korrektionsanstalt für 200 Eingeborne, berühmtem Weinbau und (1901) 1366 Einw., darunter 571 Franzosen. L. steht auf den Ruinen des alten Lambaesis, der militärischen Hauptstadt des römischen Numidien, von der noch die großartigen Trümmer des römischen Prätoriums (jetzt Altertumsmuseum), ferner ein Äskulaptempel, Amphitheater, Triumphpforten, ein Kapitol, Forum u.a. vorhanden sind. Die daselbst gefundenen Inschriften sind reich an historischen Daten, da Lambäsis von Trajan bis 238 n. Chr. das Hauptquartier der dritten Augustischen Legion, dann zivile Hauptstadt der Provinz Numidia war. Im 5. Jahrh. wurde L. von den rebellischen Numidiern verwüstet und blieb unbewohnt, bis es 1844 von Delamare entdeckt wurde. Vgl. auch Artikel »Timgad«; Cagnat, Lambèse (Par. 1893).
