Kumaon

Kumaon (Kamaon), Division der britisch-ind. Nordwestprovinzen, liegt ganz im Himalajagebirge, grenzt im N. an Tibet, im O. an Nepal und hat 32,213 qkm Fläche mit (1901) 1,207,030 Einw. (1,118,118 Hindu, 84,450 Mohammedaner). Einen Teil des Landes bilden Hochgebirge (Nanda Dewi 7821 m), den andern der südliche Babhar, ein dichtbewaldetes Hochland, das unter künstlicher Bewässerung gute Ernten gibt, und das sumpfige, ungesunde Terai. Eisen, Kupfer, Blei, Asbest u. a. sind vorhanden, werden aber nicht ausgebeutet; die wertvollen Wälder stehen jetzt unter Schutz der Regierung, ebenso die noch zahlreichen Elefanten. Nur ein Fünftel des Bodens ist kulturfähig, aber noch wenig benutzt; in neuester Zeit nehmen die Teepflanzungen zu, auch baut man in höhern Lagen Kartoffeln. Die Division zerfällt in drei Distrikte: K. (15,539 qkm mit 465,893 Einw.), Garhwal und Terai. Die Herstellung grober Stoffe ist die einzige Industrie, der Handel aber nicht unbedeutend. Hauptort ist Almora (s. d.). Die Gesundheitsstation Naini Tal ist Sommerresidenz des Lieutenant-Governors der Nordwestprovinzen mit Garnison. Die Engländer erwarben K. 1816 im Kriege gegen Nepal.
