Israel (hebr., »Gotteskämpfer«), der theokratische Beiname Jakobs (s. d.); ursprünglich Gesamtbezeichnung seiner Nachkommen (Kin der I., Israeliten), später des namentlich durch den Stamm Ephraim vertretenen Nordreichs, im Gegensatz zum Reich Juda; s. Juden.
