Horsley (spr. -lì), John Callcott, engl. Maler, geb. 29. Jan. 1817 in Brompton, machte seit 1831 seine Studien auf der Londoner Akademie und malte vornehmlich zahlreiche, im Motiv oft sehr gesuchte, in der Farbe aber gefällige Genrebilder, von denen sich: der Stolz des Dorfes in der Nationalgalerie, Jugend und Alter, Auf Antwort warten, der Virtuose und sein Nebenbuhler im South Kensington-Museum in London befinden. 1845 führte er im Hause der Lords ein Fresko: der Geist der Religion, und 1847 in der Dichterhalle des Parlamentsgebäudes ein Wandgemälde nach Milton: Satan wird durch Ithuriels Lanze verwundet, aus. Von seinen übrigen Werken sind zu nennen: Malvolio in der Sonne, l'Allegro und il Penseroso, die Tochter des Kerkermeisters, der Tag der Toten und die Barmherzigkeit Christi (Altarbild in der Kapelle des Thomashospitals zu London).
