Holmes

Holmes (spr. hōms), Oliver Wendell, amerikan. Schriftsteller, geb. 29. Aug. 1809 in Cambridge (Massachusetts), gest. 7. Seinem ersten Bande satirischer und humoristischer Gedichte: »Poems« (1836), folgten die Bände: »Songs in many keys« (1861), »Humorous poems« (1865), »Songs of many seasons« (1874), »The schoolboy« (1878), »The Iron Gate and other poems« (1880) und »Before the Curfew and other poems« (1888), die manche köstliche Proben der ihm eignen Mischung von Humor und Pathos enthalten. Aber der Schwerpunkt seines Schaffens liegt in den philosophischen Plaudereien, die zuerst im »Atlantic Monthly « erschienen: »Autocrat of the breakfast table« (1859; deutsch: »Der Tischdespot«, Stuttg. 1876), »The professor at the breakfast table« (1860; deutsch in »Meyers Volksbüchern«), »The poet at the breakfast table« (1872) und »Over the teacups« (1890). Zu wenig gewürdigt werden seine Romane: »Elsie Venner« (1861), »The Guardian Angel« (1868) und »A mortal antipathy« (1885), die in ihrer Behandlung von Erblichkeitsproblemen und ihrer psychologischen Analyse ihrer Zeit vorausgriffen. Von der Vielseitigkeit seiner Begabung zeugen auch die Bände: »Pages from an old volume of life« (1857), »Soundings from the Atlantic« (1863), »Mechanism in thought and morals« (1871), »The new portfolio« (1886), »Our hundred days in Europe« (1887), die Biographien »John Lothrop Motley« (Boston 1879) und »Life of Ralph Waldo Emerson« (das. 1884). Vgl. Kennedy, Life of O. W. H. (Boston 1383), die Biographien von Emma E. Brown (das. 1884) und J. T. Morsed. j. (das. 1896. 2 Bde.).
