Hayward (spr. hē-), Abraham, engl. Rechtsgelehrter, Übersetzer und Kritiker, geb. 31. Okt. 1802, gest. 2. Febr. 1884, studierte die Rechte, ward 1832 Anwalt, übersetzte 1831 Savignys Schrift »Vom Beruf unsrer Zeit für Gesetzgebung« und erweckte Aufsehen durch seine Prosaübersetzung des Goetheschen »Faust« (seit 1833 neun Auflagen). Neben rein juristischen Arbeiten sind zu erwähnen: »Autobiography, letters etc. of Mrs. Piozzi« (1861); »Diaries of a lady of quality« (1864); »More about Junius« (1868); »Goethe, a biographical sketch« (1877, neue Ausg. 1898); »Sketches of eminent statesmen and writers« (1880, 2 Bde.) und insbes. die »Biographical and critical essays« (1858–74, 5 Bde.; Auswahl 1878, 2 Bde.), eine Sammlung seiner Abhandlungen. Auch als Verfasser der geistreichen »Art of dining« (letzte Ausg. 1899) und der »Short rules for modern whist« (1878) wird H. oft genannt. Seinen Briefwechsel gab Carlisle heraus (»Select correspondence«, mit Biographie, Lond. 1886, 2 Bde.).
