Haweis

Haweis (spr. hao's), Hugh Reginald, engl. Geistlicher und Schriftsteller, geb. 3. April 1839 zu Egham in Surrey, gest. 29. Jan. 1901, studierte in Cambridge und trat als Prediger in London auf den Posten des verstorbenen F. D. Maurice (s. d.), wie dieser eines der Häupter der sogen. Broad Church. Im Sinne der Bewegungspartei war er ein Freund Garibaldis. Auch für die Einführung Richard Wagners in England hat er sich erfolgreich bemüht. H. trat zuerst mit einer halbreligiösen Novelle: »Amy Arnold« (1871), selbständig auf. Seine wichtigsten übrigen Schriften, abgesehen von theologischen (darunter »Broad Church, or, what is coming«, 1891), sind: »Music and morals« (17. Aufl. 1896; deutsch u. d. T: »Die Tonkunst und ihre Meister«, Berl. 1886), »Thoughts for the times« (12. Aufl. 1881), »Shakspere and the stage« (1878), »American humourists« (1882), »My musical life« (1884, 4. Aufl. 1896), »Pet, or pastimes and penalties« (1886), »The dead pulpit« (1896), »Travel and talk, 1885–93–95«, ein Bericht über seine Reisen in Amerika, Australien, der Südsee etc. (1897, 2 Bde.), »Old violins« (1898) und die Biographie »Sir Morell Mackenzie« (1893).
