Hartlepool (spr. hártlpūl), Seestadt (municipal borough) in der engl. Grafschaft Durham, besteht aus dem eigentlichen H., auf steiler Halbinsel, mit einer gotischen Kirche (St. Hilda) aus dem 12. Jahrh. und (1901) 22,723 Einw., und dem jenseit der ausgedehnten Docks liegenden West H., mit 62,627 Einw. H. hat Schiff- und Maschinenbau (1901 wurden 31 Schiffe von 73,277 Ton. für das Inland und 10 von 25,049 T. für das Ausland gebaut), ist aber vorwiegend Handelsstadt. Zum Hafen gehören (1901) 279 Seeschiffe von 419,103 T. und 52 Fischerboote. 1901 liefen 2089 Schiffe (darunter 1147 Küstenfahrer) von 835,746 T. ein. Wert der Ausfuhr britischer Produkte (meist Woll-, Baumwoll-, Eisenwaren, Kohlen) 1901: 1,481,471 Pfd. Sterl., der Einfuhr (Getreide, Eisen, Holz, Früchte, Eier) 2,004,481 Pfd. Sterl. An der Meeresküste finden sich merkwürdige Höhlen. H. ist Sitz eines deutschen Konsuls und war schon im 12. Jahrh. als Hafenplatz bedeutend, West H. ist erst 1844 angelegt.
