Harington

Harington (spr. hárringt'n), Sir John, engl Schriftsteller, geb. 1561 bei Bath in Somerset, gest. 1612, zu Eton und Cambridge erzogen, nahm Kriegsdienste und ward 1599 vom Grafen von Essex auf dem Schlachtfeld zum Ritter geschlagen, dann aber in dessen Sturz mit verwickelt. Sein Ruhm beruht hauptsächlich auf einer noch heute geschätzten Übersetzung von Ariosts »Orlando furioso« im Versmaß des Originals (1591), eingeleitet mit einer »Apologie of poetrie«. Außerdem haben wir von H. noch viele Versuche in Prosa und Versen. Seine Sinngedichte erschienen London 1615, vollständiger 1618 u. ö.; seine gesamten Werke, unter denen seine Briefe als humoristische und scharf gezeichnete Sittenbilder besondern Wert haben, wurden u. d. T.: »Nugae antiquae« (Lond. 1779, 3 Bde.; mit Anmerkungen von Park, 1804, 2 Bde.) herausgegeben; sein interessanter Essay: »A short view of the state of Ireland« erschien 1605 (Neudruck von Macray 1880).
