Hakodate

Hakodate, für den Fremdhandel offene Hafenstadt in der japan. Provinz Oshima, auf der Südspitze der Insel Jeso, unter 41°46´ nördl. Br., an der Tsugarustraße und einer geräumigen schönen Bucht, hat einen großen, vortrefflichen, befestigten Hafen, schöne Tempel, Schulhaus der amerikanischen Mission, Zündholzfabrik, englisches Konsulat, russisches Vizekonsulat und (1898) 78,040 Einw. (darunter 600 Aino), die Handel mit Seetang, getrockneten Fischen etc. betreiben. Dabei die Schwefelquelle Shai Sawabe. Der Hafen wird im Winter von russischen Schiffen und Walfängern aufgesucht. Die Einfuhr betrug 1900: 6,2, die Ausfuhr 4,4 Mill. Mk.
