Gortyn

Gortyn

Gortyn (Gortyna), im Altertum eine der bedeutendsten Städte Kretas, unweit des Lethäos (jetzt Hieropotamo), mit Tempeln des Apollon Pythios, der Artemis und des Zeus, kämpfte lange mit Knosos um die Oberherrschaft auf der Insel und war unter der Herrschaft der Römer deren Hauptstadt. Ruinen liegen beim Dorf Hagii-Deka. Neuerdings wurde G. bekannt durch eine 1884 von Halbherr und Fabricius dort gefundene Inschrift aus der zweiten Hälfte des 7. Jahrh. v. Chr., die, in altem Dorisch und mit einem fast rein phönikischen Alphabet geschrieben, hochinteressante gesetzliche Bestimmungen enthält. Vgl. Bücheler u.
