Goajira

Goajira (spr. -chīra), nördlichste Halbinsel Südamerikas, westlich vom Golf von Maracaibo, 12,000 qkm groß, ist von der Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta durch breite Grasebenen getrennt, in der vulkanischen Serra Macuira bis 858 m hoch. Die Küsten sind sandig; Ankerplätze bieten im NW. die Bahia Honda und El Portete, im O. die Laguna da Tucacas und Cojoro. Bewohnt wird die Halbinsel von den Goajiro (s. d.). Ausgeführt werden Farb- und Bauhölzer und Häute. Die bis 1891 zwischen Kolumbien und Venezuela geteilte Halbinsel gehört seitdem ganz zu jenem. Hauptort ist Rio Hacha (s. d.). S. Karte »Peru etc.«.
