Glaisher

Glaisher (spr. glĕscher), James, Physiker, geb. 7. April 1809 in London, gest. daselbst 7. Febr. 1903, war Assistent am Observatorium zu Madinglay bei Cambridge, dann in Greenwich und 1840–74 Direktor der magnetischen und meteorologischen Abteilung des dortigen Observatoriums. 1867 wurde er Präsident der von ihm gegründeten Royal Meteorological Society, später auch der Aeronautical und der Photographic Society. 1874 legte er seine Stellung am Observatorium nieder. Er arbeitete über Ausstrahlung der Wärme, über Bildung von Schneekristallen, leuchtende Meteore, über Regenfälle, unterirdische Temperatur und Wasserzirkulation. Zu meteorologischen Zwecken machte er zahlreiche Luftballonfahrten und erreichte auf einer derselben mit Coxwell angeblich die Höhe von 11,000 m. Er schrieb: »Hygrometrical tables« (1847 u. ö.), »Travels in the air« (neue Ausg. 1880) und vollendete die von Burckhardt 1814 begonnenen, von Dase 1862–65 fortgesetzten »Factor tables«, die 1879–83 in 3 Bänden erschienen.
