Gheel (Geel), Gemeinde in der belg. Provinz Antwerpen, Arrond. Turnhout, an der Staatsbahnlinie Antwerpen-Hamont (Anschluß nach Deutschland), mit 2 got. Kirchen (eine der heil. Dympna geweiht), einem Gemeinde-Collège, betreibt Wollweberei, Färberei, Butterhandel, Zigarrenfabriken etc. und hat (1902) 13,549 Einw. G. ist von alters her bekannt als »Irrenkolonie«, da im Ort und in den umliegenden Gehöften (1900) 13,076 Irre untergebracht sind, die von den Einwohnern gegen Entschädigung gepflegt werden.
