Amenhotep

Amenhotep (Amenophis), Name mehrerer altägypt. Könige der 18. Dynastie. A. III. (um 1400 v. Chr.) ist berühmt als Erbauer mehrerer großer ägyptischer Heiligtümer, unter andern des prachtvollen Tempels von Luksor; ihn stellen auch die beiden, von den Griechen dem Memnon (s. d.) zugeschriebenen Kolossalstatuen dar, die vor dem Totentempel des Königs in Theben standen. Sein Sohn A. IV., ein fanatischer Reformer, suchte die alte Religion zu beseitigen und den ausschließlichen Dienst des Sonnengestirns einzuführen; er nannte sich selbst Ech-en-aton (Geist der Sonne), verbot den Dienst Amons und aller andern Götter, ließ ihre Namen und Bilder vertilgen, verließ Theben und erbaute sich eine neue Residenz (Ruinen bei Tell el Amarna). Nach seinem Tode wurden seine Neuerungen wieder beseitigt und sein Name auf den Monumenten ausgetilgt. – A., Sohn des Paapis, ein Zeitgenosse A.' III., galt als ein großer Weiser und wurde in der Ptolemäerzeit göttlich verehrt.
