Find Mac Cumaill

Find Mac Cumaill oder richtiger Fionn Mac Chumhail (d. h. Sohn des Chumhail), ein historischer Fürst in Irland (gest. 273 n. Chr.), der aber in der Mythe seines Volkes zu einem Welteroberer anwuchs, ungefähr wie König Artur. Sein Sohn war Ossín. Echte alte Lieder und prosaische Aufzeichnungen der Iren verherrlichen sein Heldentum; mit den irischen Einwanderern kam seine Gestalt zu den Hochschotten, die noch immer von ihm erzählen. In Macphersons »Ossian« ist er zu Fingal umgetauft und mit empfindungsvoller Romantik frei ausgemalt.
