Fawcett (spr. faoßet), 1) Henry, engl. Volkswirt und Politiker, geb. 26. Aug. 1833 in Salisbury, gest. 6. Nov. 1884 in Cambridge, besuchte daselbst das Trinity College und machte sich frühzeitig durch sein mathematisches Wissen bemerkbar. Im September 1858 ward er durch einen Unfall auf der Jagd des Augenlichtes beraubt. Nachdem er sich durch seine wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten einen geachteten Namen erworben hatte, wurde er 1863 Professor der Volkswirtschaft an der Universität Cambridge. Seit 1865 Mitglied des Parlaments, bekämpfte er die Politik des konservativen Ministeriums und wurde 1879 im Ministerium Gladstone Generalpostmeister, als welcher er wichtige Verbesserungen im englischen Postwesen durchgeführt hat. Er schrieb: »Manual of political economy« (1863, 6. Aufl. 1883); »The economic position of the British labourer« (1865); »Pauperism, its causes and remedies« (1871); »Speeches on some current political questions« (1873); »Protection and reciprocity« (6. Aufl. 1885; deutsch, Leipz. 1878); »Indian finance« (1880); »State socialism and the nationalisation of the land« (1883); »Labour and wages« (1884). Vgl. Leslie Stephen, Life of Henry F. (Lond. 1885). – Seine Gattin Millicent, geborne Garrett, geb. 1847, hat sich gleichfalls als sozialwissenschaftliche Schriftstellerin, namentlich in bezug auf die FrauenfrageEssays and lectures«, 1872; »Political economy for beginners«, 6. Aufl. 1887; deutsch, Berl. 1888; »Some eminent women of our time«, 1889; »Life of queen Victoria«, neue Ausg. 1901; »Life of Sir W. Molesworth«, 1901), und als Rednerin hervorgetan.

2) Edgar, amerikan. Schriftsteller, geb. 26. Mai 1847 in New York, studierte im Columbia College daselbst und widmete sich dem literarischen Beruf. Seine ersten Romane: »Purple and fine linen« (1875), »Ellen Story« (1876), »A gentleman of leisure« (1882) und »An ambitious woman« (1883) waren als Bilder aus der Gesellschaft nicht ohne Verdienst; seine spätern Werke aber fielen bedenklich ab. Seine DichtungenFantasy and passion«, 1878) sind von gleichmäßigerm Wert.
