Epithalamĭon

Epithalamĭon (griech., lat. Epithalamium), bei den Griechen das von einem Chor von Jünglingen und Jungfrauen vor dem Schlafgemach (thalamos, s. d.) der Neuvermählten gesungene Lied (erneuert von R. Wagner im »Lohengrin«). Die römischen Dichter ahmten auch diese lyrische Gattung seit Catull nach, gestalteten aber das E. allmählich zu einem meist in epischem Maß gehaltenen Lobgedicht auf das junge Paar, seine Eltern und Ahnen.
