Earl

Earl (engl., spr. örl), aus dem dän. Jarl entstanden und seit der Eroberung Englands durch den Dänenkönig Knut statt des bis dahin gebräuchlichen sächsischen Ealdorman (s. Alderman) angenommen, unserm »Graf« entsprechend, bezeichnete bis um die Mitte des 14. Jahrh. die höchste Stufe des englischen Adels. Als aber Eduard III. 1355 seinen gleichnamigen Sohn, den sogen. Schwarzen Prinzen, zum Herzog (duke) von Cornwall ernannte, sank der Earlstitel auf die zweite und, als 1386 Richard II. Robert de Vere zum Marquis von Dublin erhob, auf die dritte Stufe herab. Gegenwärtig ist der Titel E. bloße Standesauszeichnung ohne alle Beziehung auf territoriale Gewalt. Mit dem Viscount und Baron hat der E. den Titel Right Honourable. Baron ist der E. in dem Sinne, wie man die Peers im allgemeinen Barone nennt, oder in Schottland als Besitzer einer Baronie. S. Adel, S. 102.
