Eagle

Eagle (spr. ïgl, »Adler«), Goldmünze der Vereinigten Staaten zu 10 Dollar mit dem Adler als Prägebild. Zuerst wog er 17,407 g bei 11/12 Feinheit, = 44,518 Mk., entsprechend der halbe; seit 1792: 270 Troygrains oder 17,4957 g, und 1796 kam der 1/4-E. hinzu. 1834 ward sein Rauhgewicht auf 258 und der Goldgehalt auf 232 Grains herabgesetzt, 1837 aber das Feingewicht auf 9/10 oder 15,0463 g, = 41,9792 Mk., erhöht; 1849 trat der Doppel-E. hinzu. Kalifornien münzt seit 1851 auch fünffache und seit Ende 1852 neunfache Eagles aus, anfangs von etwas größerm Rauhgewicht. S. Tafel »Münzen V«, Fig. 17.
