Domesday Book

Domesday Book (Doomsday Book, engl., spr. dūmsdē buck), das große Reichsgrundbuch Englands, wurde in der letzten Zeit der Regierung Wilhelms des Eroberers, 1086, angelegt und enthält, 34 Grafschaften umfassend, ein ausführliches Verzeichnis ihres Grundbesitzes nebst der Zahl der Einwohner nach Stand, Einkünften, Abgaben etc. Das Werk wurde zu London 1783 in 2 Foliobänden herausgegeben, wozu noch 2 Supplemente (1811–16) sowie Ellis' »General introduction do the D.« (das. 1838, 2 Bde.) hinzukamen. 1862 erschien eine photographische Nachbildung eines Teiles der alten noch in der Schatzkammer aufbewahrten Handschrift.
