Cowell

Cowell (spr. kau-ĕl), Edward Byles, engl. Sanskritgelehrter, geb. 23. Jan. 1826 zu Ipswich in Suffolk, gest. 1903, studierte zu Oxford, lebte längere Zeit in Indien und bekleidete seit 1867 die Professur des Sanskrits an der Universität zu Cambridge. Seine ausgezeichnete Kennerschaft bewährte er in der Veröffentlichung von Texten und Übersetzungen aus verschiedenen Gebieten der Sanskritliteratur. Die Publikation einer englischen Übersetzung der größten buddhistischen Erzählungssammlung (»The Jâtaka, or stories of the Buddha's former births«, Cambr. 1895ff.) wurde von ihm geleitet. Auch gab er Colebrookes »Miscellaneous essays« (mit Anmerkungen, Lond. 1873, 2 Bde.) heraus.
