Conolly (spr. kónnōli), John, Irrenarzt, geb. 27. Mai 1794 zu Market-Rasen in Lincolnshire, gest. 5. März 1866 in Hanwell, studierte seit 1817 in Edinburg, war 1828–30 Professor der Medizin in London und wurde 1839 Arzt und Dirigent in der Irrenanstalt Middlesex Asylum zu Hanwell. Hier führte er bis 1843 das von ihm so genannte Nonrestraint-System ein, das die Anwendung mechanischer Zwangsmittel bis auf einzelne Ausnahmefälle vollständig verwirft. 1844 legte er seine Stelle nieder, suchte aber die Sache der Irren unausgesetzt zu fördern und beteiligte sich auch an der Gründung des Idiotenasyls in Earlswood. Sein »Treatment of the insane without mechanical restraints« (Lond. 1856; deutsch von Brosius, Lahr 1860) wurde anfangs allgemein angefeindet, gewann aber allmählich immer mehr Freunde, bis endlich Conollys System überall, wenn auch mehr oder weniger modifiziert, zur Durchführung gelangte. Er schrieb noch: »Inquiry concerning the indications of insanity« (1830); »Construction and government of lunatic asylums« (1847); »Study of Hamlet« (1863).
