Comayāgua

Comayāgua, Departement der mittelamerikan. Republik Honduras, 11,361 qkm mit (1887) 16,739 Einw. und zahlreichen Ruinen alter Quiché-Städte (Squier zählte 300–400 Terrassen und Pyramiden, bekannt unter dem Namen Tenampua oder Pueblo Viejo). – Die Hauptstadt C. (Concepcion de C.), 650 m ü. M., am Rio Humuya, in fruchtbarem Tal, ist Bischofsitz mit schöner Kathedrale und 8000 Einw. Die Stadt wurde 1540 als Valladolid la Nueva gegründet, hatte 1827 vor ihrer Zerstörung durch Guatemala 18,000 Einw. und war Hauptstadt der Republik, bis Tegucigalpa ihre Stelle einnahm.
