Clare (spr. klǟr), 1) Insel an der Westküste Irlands, an der Öffnung von Clew Bay, ist 26 qkm groß, steigt bis 463 man und hat etwa 800 Bewohner. Die Insel gehört zur Grafschaft Mayo. – 2) Küstengrafschaft in der irischen Provinz Munster, breitet sich halbinselartig zwischen der Galwaybai u. dem Ästuar des Shannon aus, grenzt östlich an die Grafschaften Galway und Tipperary und südlich an Limerick, umfaßt 3351 qkm (60,8 QM.) und zählt (1901) 112,119 Einw. (33 auf 1 qkm), davon 98 Proz. Katholiken. Hauptstadt ist Ennis. Der Name der Grafschaft stammt von dem Dorf C. an der Mündung des Fergus in den Shannon. – 3) Stadt in der engl. Grafschaft West-Suffolk, am Stour, mit einer gotischen Kirche, den Ruinen eines alten, festen Schlosses und einer Augustinerabtei aus dem 13. Jahrh., Seidenweberei und (1891) 1657 Einw.
