Chinook (spr. tschinúk), ein warmer, trockner westlicher Wind, der auf der Ostseite des Felsengebirges (besonders zwischen 50 und 55° nördl. Br.) auftritt und mehrere Tage dauern kann. Vor seinem Auftreten zeigt sich eine Bank von Kumuluswolken über dem Gebirge. Er ist ein föhnartiger Wind von sehr wechselnder Stärke und wird im Sommer eher kühl, aber im Winter sehr warm empfunden, so daß z. B auf den Kootenayplains das Vieh den ganzen Winter hindurch weiden kann. Die Temperatur kann von -10° auf +20° steigen. Fußhoher Schnee schmilzt in wenigen Stunden.
