Caerwys

Caerwys (spr. karūis, Caer-ar-Wys), altes Dorf im engl. Fürstentum Wales, Grafschaft Flint, mit 1500 Einw., berühmt als die alte Sänger- und Harfnerheimat Britanniens. Hier wurden vor alters die Eisteddfods gehalten, ein Fest, auf dem die Barden von Wales um den Preis der Dichtkunst und Musik wetteiferten. Seit den Zeiten der Königin Elisabeth war diese Feier eingegangen; erst 1798 tauchte sie wieder auf. Auch in jüngster Zeit (1892 in Rhyl, 1893 in Pontypridd) sind wieder Eisteddfods abgehalten worden.
