Butȳlalkohol C4H10O, Alkohol aus der Fettsäurereihe, der als farblose Flüssigkeit in vier Isomeren auftritt. Normaler B. (Propylkarbinol, 1 = Butanol) CH3.(CH2)2.CH2OH entsteht aus Butyraldehyd durch Reduktion und aus Glyzerin durch Bakteriengärung, siedet bei 116,8°, gibt bei Oxydation normale Buttersäure. Sekundärer B. (Butylenhydrat, Methyläthylkarbinol, 2 = Bytanol) CH3.CH2.CHOH.CH3, siedet bei 99°, gibt bei Oxydation Methyläthylkelon, dann Essigsäure. Isobutylalkohol (Gärungsbutylalkohol, Isopropylkarbinol, Methyl-2-Propanol-1) CH.(CH3)2.CH2OH, im Fuselöl aus Kartoffeln, siedet bei 108,4°, gibt bei Oxydation Isobuttersäure, Essigsäure, Kohlensäure, Aceton. Tertiärer B. (Trimethylkarbinol, Dimethyläthanol) (CH3)3COH findet sich im käuflichen Isobutylalkohol, entsteht aus Acetylchlorid und Zinkmethyl, siedet bei 83°, gibt bei Oxydation Aceton, Kohlensäure und Essigsäure.
