Brooklyn

Brooklyn (spr. brūcklĭn), bis vor kurzem selbständige Stadt des Staates New York und großer Hafen-, Fabrik- und Wohnvorort der Stadt New York, auf der Insel Long Island, gegenwärtig aber bloßer Stadtteil (borough) von New York, mit (1990) 1,166,582 Einw. – B. wurde 1625 von Wallonen gegründet und hieß früher Breuckelen, dann Brookland. 1776 fiel es infolge der in der Nähe geschlagenen Schlacht von Long Island in die Hände der Engländer, die sich hier 6 Jahre lang behaupteten. Seit 1834 hatte es Stadtrechte, und seine Bewohnerzahl wuchs bis 1850 auf 96,850 und bis 1890 auf 806,343 an. 1895 wurde es aber New York einverleibt (Weiteres s. New York). Vgl.
