Brodrick, William Saint John Fremantle, engl. Staatsmann, geb. 1856 als Sohn des Viscount Middleton, studierte und wurde 1880 als Mitglied der konservativen Partei ins Unterhaus gewählt. Er war 1886–92 Finanzsekretär im Kriegsministerium und stürzte 21. Juni 1895 durch seinen Antrag, den Gehalt des Kriegsministers zu kürzen, das Kabinett Nosebery, worauf er im Kabinett Salisbury zum Unterstaatssekretär im Kriegsministerium ernannt wurde. 1898–1900 war er Unterstaatssekretär im Auswärtigen Amt, und im November 1900 wurde er bei der Umbildung des dritten Kabinetts Salisbury Kriegsminister.
