Brig (Brieg, franz. Brigue). Bezirkshauptstadt im schweizer. Kanton Wallis, 684 m ü. M., liegt gleich dem nahen Glis (mit Pfarrkirche) am Austritte der Saltine in das Rhonetal und am Fuß der Simplonstraße, ist Station der Simplonbahn am Nordeingang des 19,73 km langen Tunnels und der Postroute über die Furka und Grimsel, hat eine schöne Jesuitenkirche, ein Gymnasium (ehemals Jesuitenkollegium) und (1900) 2194 Einw.
