Vizeu (Viseu, spr. wisē-u), Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen portug. Distrikts (Provinz Beira), 540 m ü. M., auf einer Anhöhe in einer fruchtbaren, weiten Ebene gelegen, Endstation der Zweigbahn V.-Santa Comba Dāo, Sitz eines Bischofs und eines Militärbrigadekommandos, hat eine gotische Kathedrale mit zwei romanischen Türmen und Gemälden des in V. gebornen Vasco da Gama, eine höhere Lehranstalt, ein Priesterseminar, Theater, ein großes Krankenhaus, Viehzucht (berühmte Schinken), eine besuchte Messe (im September) und (1900) 8216 Einw. – Die außerhalb der Stadt gelegene Kirche St.-Miguel ist die sagenhafte Ruhestätte des 711 gefallenen letzten Gotenkönigs Roderich. Die noch vorhandenen Wälle eines römischen Lagers werden nach dem lusitanischen Häuptling Viriathus, der es den Römern nach seinem Siege über Decius Junius Brutus abnahm, Cava do Viriato genannt. V. wurde 1044 den Mauren von König Ferdinand entrissen.
